Capcom Begin Production on New CG Resident Evil Movie

A new Resident Evil CG movie from Capcom is on the way in a partnership with Sega Sammy subsidiary group Marza Animation Planet. Despite the production title of Resident Evil CG 3, the new film is rumored not to be following 2008’s Resident Evil Degeneration or 2012’s Resident Evil: Damnation, but is rather a reboot of the series focusing on Leon, Chris and Rebbecca Chambers.

“MARZA ANIMATION PLANET INC., a CG animation film production company of SEGA SAMMY Group, today announced a production of a full CG animation movie RESIDENT EVIL CG 3 (working title) based on Japanese game developer CAPCOM’s internationally renowned videogame franchise RESIDENT EVIL. The movie will be penned by Makoto Fukami (PSYCHO-PASS series) and directed by Takanori Tsujimoto (Hard Revenge Milly – The Beginning, Mobile Police Patlabor series, Ultraman X). Notably, also Hollywood box office #1 hit J-horror creator Takashi Shimizu (THE GRUDGE) is attached as an Executive Producer and will oversee the production. Producer to RESIDENT EVIL game franchise and Milla Jovovich & Paul Anderson pair’s popular live-action movie franchise, Hiroyuki Kobayashi (CAPCOM) has joined the project as an Executive Supervisor.“

Mirroring Capcom’s recent efforts to bring the game series closer in line with its horror roots, the new film has a few names that should be a welcome surprise for horror fans. Seeing a renowned horror director like Takashi Shimizu attached, albeit in an executive producer role is also a promising move that hopefully signals their future plans for the series. The Shimizu produced Rigor Mortis was my favorite film of 2013 and so his involvement bodes well for the film. Director Takanori Tsujimoto is also no stranger to the genre having directed the 2011 splatter film Red Tears.

The movie is currently slated to release in 2017.
